Sleep and your skin. Why beauty sleep is actually real.

My personal story with sleep

As a kid, and then really badly during puberty, I struggled to sleep. My nights were all over the place. Some nights I slept fine, other nights I was awake for hours, and my schedule was never the same two days in a row. Back then I didn't think much of it. But I did notice my skin was often dull, a bit tired looking, and more reactive than my friends' skin. I always had this feeling that the two things were connected.

Years later I finally went looking for the actual science. Was my bad sleep really showing up on my face, or was I imagining it? What I found genuinely surprised me. Sleep is not a passive "off" button for your body. It is when a huge amount of skin repair actually happens. And when you skip it, your skin really does pay for it.

So let me take you through the night, from the moment you close your eyes to the moment you wake up. And because I want this to be useful and not just interesting, after each part I will give you one practical thing you can do.

First, why the night is special for your skin

Your body runs on a 24 hour clock. Not just your sleep, but almost every system you have, including your skin. Scientists call this your circadian rhythm. Your skin has its own version of this clock, and it does different jobs at different times of day.

Roughly speaking, the day is for protection. Your skin is busy shielding you from UV light, pollution and daily damage. The night is for repair. When the sun is down and you are asleep, your skin shifts its energy toward fixing what got damaged and building new cells. Studies that measured skin around the clock found clear daily rhythms in things like water loss, blood flow, skin temperature and cell renewal, with the skin becoming more "permeable" and more active in repair in the evening and night (DOI, DOI).

So your skin at night is a bit like a shop that closes its doors to customers so the staff can finally restock the shelves and fix the broken shelf in the back. And the whole thing is run by hormones. Let me show you the main three.

1. Growth hormone: your night time repair crew

This is the one that surprised me most, so let's start here.

Growth hormone is exactly what it sounds like. It is a hormone that tells your body to grow, build and repair tissue. And here is the beautiful part: the biggest release of growth hormone in a normal day happens shortly after you fall asleep, during your first stretch of deep sleep (also called slow wave sleep).

This is not a small effect. In one classic review of the science, researchers found that in men about 70% of the growth hormone pulses during sleep happened at the same time as deep sleep, and the more deep sleep someone got, the more growth hormone they released (DOI). So deep sleep and the repair hormone are basically holding hands.

Why does your skin care? Because growth hormone is part of what drives the repair and renewal of your tissues, and your skin is a tissue that takes a beating all day. This is the window where a lot of the rebuilding gets done. In animal studies, taking sleep away actually lowered collagen building in the skin (DOI). And here is a detail I found kind of sad but important: the amount of deep sleep, and the growth hormone that comes with it, drops quite a lot between the ages of about 30 and 40 (DOI). So protecting your deep sleep matters more, not less, as you get older.

The key thing to understand is that most of your deep sleep happens in the first half of the night. So the repair window is not "any 8 hours". It leans early.

Your move: protect your deep sleep, and that mostly means protecting the start of your night. Go to bed early enough that you are not cutting into that first deep block, and try to keep your bedtime roughly the same every day, even on weekends. Two things that quietly steal deep sleep: alcohol in the evening and a big heavy meal right before bed, so keep those earlier where you can. A cool, dark bedroom helps too. I still struggle myself with dinner time: we tend to eat late (yoga straight after work, my partner commuting,...) and then I want to go to bed early; not ideal.

2. Cortisol: not the villain, it just needs its rhythm

Cortisol gets called "the stress hormone" so often that people treat it as something to get rid of. That is a bit unfair. Cortisol is essential and genuinely useful. It is supposed to be high in the morning, because that is part of what helps you wake up, feel alert and get going for the day. That morning rise even has a name, the cortisol awakening response, and it is a sign of a healthy body clock, not something to fight. So honestly, embrace your morning cortisol.

The key word here is rhythm. In a healthy day, cortisol peaks in the morning and then drifts down over the course of the day, reaching its lowest point at night while you sleep. High cortisol in the morning is good. It is the gentle evening and night time dip that your skin really cares about. The issue is never cortisol itself. The issue is when that rhythm gets flattened, and cortisol stays high at night when it is supposed to be low.

Why does the night time low matter for skin? Because when cortisol is stuck high around the clock, it stops being helpful and starts causing problems. Chronically high cortisol and other stress hormones weaken your skin barrier and interfere with the skin cells that keep that barrier strong (DOI). It also pushes inflammation. So the quiet, low cortisol window at night is when your skin finally gets a break and can calm down and repair. You want the shape: peak in the morning, trough at night. Not a flat line stuck on high.

Here is where sleep comes in. When you sleep badly, that rhythm gets flattened and disturbed. In one study, a night of sleep deprivation actually pushed cortisol levels up, and disrupted sleep and body clock were linked to higher levels of inflammatory markers in the blood (DOI). So poor sleep robs your skin of that restful low cortisol window and keeps it in a low grade "stressed and inflamed" state instead.

This part hit home for me. During puberty, my nights were messy and my schedule was all over the place, and my skin was reactive and broke out easily. Looking back, I was probably keeping my cortisol higher at night than it needed to be, right when it should have been dropping.

Your move: you are not trying to kill your cortisol, you are trying to give it its natural shape. Lean into the morning peak (getting daylight early in the day actually helps sharpen it), and then help it fall in the evening with a real wind down, not just closing your laptop and lying down still buzzing. Dim the lights in the hour before bed, get off stressful stuff like work email and doomscrolling, and do something calm and boring on purpose (a shower, a book, ironing, slow breathing). A consistent sleep and wake time keeps the whole rhythm sharp, so your body knows when to rev up and when to power down. A good way to stimulate this rhythm is by doing strength or cardio in the morning and yoga or easy walking in the evening.

3. Melatonin: your built in night time antioxidant

Melatonin is famous as the "sleep hormone". Your brain releases it when it gets dark, and it tells your body that night has arrived and it is time to sleep. Light, especially in the evening, suppresses it. Darkness lets it rise (DOI).

But melatonin has a second job that most people have never heard of, and this is the one skincare people should care about. Melatonin is a genuinely powerful antioxidant. On top of that, your skin can even make its own melatonin locally, and it uses it to protect skin cells from damage, including damage from UV light and from stressed cell "power plants" called mitochondria (DOI). Its antioxidant strength is a big reason it is being studied as a skincare ingredient at all (DOI).

Why does this matter at night? All day your skin collects free radical damage from sun, pollution and normal living. Free radicals are unstable molecules that damage your cells and speed up skin aging. Antioxidants are the things that neutralise them. So the night time rise in melatonin is like an overnight clean up crew, quietly mopping up some of the day's damage while you sleep. If you never get properly into the dark, quiet, sleeping state, you are cutting that clean up short.

Your move: protect your melatonin by protecting the dark. In the evening, dim your lights and switch to warmer, softer lighting instead of bright white. Cut down on screens close to bedtime, because the bright, bluish light from phones, tablets and laptops in the evening is known to suppress the melatonin rise (DOI). If you really cannot put the screen away, night mode or blue light blocking glasses help reduce that effect (DOI). And one that surprises people: get bright daylight in the morning. Light in the morning sets your clock so that melatonin comes at the right time in the evening. If this does not cut it for you, you can try supplementing with melatonin in the evening (the usual daily dose is 299 micrograms per day, but you can try taking 1 mg for a better effect).

4. Your skin barrier repairs itself, but it also gets thirsty

Now to the skin barrier, because this is where the whole thing becomes very concrete.

Your skin barrier is the outer layer that keeps the good stuff (water) in and the bad stuff (irritants, bacteria) out. We measure how well it is working with something called transepidermal water loss, or TEWL. Higher TEWL means more water is escaping, which means a weaker or busier barrier.

Here is the interesting twist. At night, while your skin is renewing cells and repairing, it also loses more water than during the day. Those around the clock studies found that skin permeability and water loss are higher in the evening and at night (DOI). So the night is repair time, but it is also the time your skin is most likely to dry out. That is not a contradiction, it is just your skin being busy and a bit leaky at the same time.

And this is exactly where sleep quality shows up. In a well known study, women who were poor sleepers had a higher baseline water loss (a weaker barrier) than good sleepers. When researchers deliberately stressed their skin barrier and then measured recovery, the good sleepers recovered 30% better after 72 hours. The poor sleepers also showed more signs of intrinsic skin aging and rated their own appearance lower (DOI). In another study, simply restricting sleep slowed down how fast a small skin wound healed and how fast the barrier came back (DOI).

So "my skin looks tired when I don't sleep" is not in your head. It is a measurable, weaker barrier.

Your move: two parts here. First, this is the real, honest reason a night moisturizer makes sense. Since your skin loses more water overnight, putting on a moisturizer (ideally one with humectants to attract water and something occlusive to seal it in) helps your barrier hold onto water during exactly the window it tends to lose it. Second, and this is the bigger one, give your barrier enough time. Barrier recovery takes real hours of sleep across the night, so this is the effect that most rewards simply getting your 7 to 9 hours.

5. Inflammation calms down, and your skin gets fed

A couple of quieter things happen overnight that are worth grouping together.

First, inflammation. Good sleep keeps your immune system balanced. When you lose sleep, your body ramps up inflammatory signals: studies show that even partial sleep loss raises inflammatory markers like IL-6 and TNF-alpha (DOI). Chronic low grade inflammation is one of the main drivers of skin aging (this is the "inflammaging" idea I talked about in the diet and skin aging post). So a good night is quietly anti-inflammatory, and a bad night quietly turns the inflammation dial up.

Second, oxidative stress. There is striking research showing that when animals are severely deprived of sleep, damaging free radicals (reactive oxygen species) build up in the body, and giving antioxidants can actually protect against the harm (DOI). It is a dramatic experiment, but the principle is simple: sleep is part of how your body keeps free radical damage in check. Less sleep, more oxidative stress. And oxidative stress is exactly what ages skin.

Your move: this one is less about a trick and more about the mindset. Treat sleep as an actual anti aging and anti inflammatory step, on the same list as your sunscreen and your antioxidants, not as the thing you sacrifice to fit everything else in. What short sleep actually does to your skin

Let me pull the "bad night" side together, because it makes the point clearly. When you regularly sleep too little, you do not just feel tired. Underneath, your growth hormone driven repair shrinks, your cortisol and inflammation stay higher, your barrier gets weaker and loses more water, and free radical damage builds up. Over months and years, that shows up as duller skin, a more reactive and easily irritated barrier, and faster intrinsic aging.

Here is the good sleep versus short sleep picture in one table, based on what the studies actually measured:

A quick word on screens, because this was my problem

I want to come back to screens for a second, because for teenage me this was the real issue, and it is the real issue for a lot of people now.

Evening screen use hurts your skin twice over. First, the bright bluish light suppresses your melatonin rise, so you fall asleep later and get less of that antioxidant protection (DOI). Second, just having devices around at bedtime is strongly linked to less sleep and worse sleep quality. A large review across more than a hundred thousand children and teens found that bedtime device use was linked to clearly worse sleep, and even just having the device in the room was enough to hurt sleep (DOI). If I could go back and tell my puberty self one thing, it would probably be to get the phone out of the bed.

Your move: pick a "screens off" time before bed and try to keep the phone out of arm's reach, ideally out of the room. If that feels impossible, at least use night mode or blue light glasses in the evening, and dim everything down.

OK Emma great, now what's the actual takeaway?

Sleep is not a break from skincare. Sleep is skincare. It is the window where your skin actually rebuilds collagen, calms inflammation, mops up free radicals and repairs its barrier, all run by hormones that only show up when you sleep properly and in the dark.

If you remember five things, make it these. One, protect the first half of your night, because that is where your deep sleep and repair hormone live. Two, embrace your morning cortisol, but wind down at night so it can fall the way it is meant to instead of staying high. Three, keep your evenings dark and low on screens so melatonin can rise and do its antioxidant job. Four, use a moisturizer at night, because that is genuinely when your skin loses the most water. Five, and most importantly, just get your 7 to 9 hours as consistently as you can, because full barrier and immune repair needs the time.

Looking back, teenage me was not imagining it. My messy, screen filled, inconsistent nights really were showing up on my face. The good news is that this is one of the few "anti aging" things that is completely free. You just have to lie down and let your skin do the work.
